Printmaking:

Jerawit Surtsit was born in 1985 in Chiang Mai and graduated from Rajamangala University Technology of Lanna with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2008. For his work, he draws inspiration from nature, always keenly aware of the landscape and flora when he travels. He says: There are so many interesting things to explore when contemplating landscapes and nature, depending on the season and the time of day as well as according to each individuals perspective. For example, the way the sunlight filters through the leaves of a tree, giving the effect of dappled shadow, patches of light and shade, can represent a particular moment and dimension of time, and lead us to a new perception of a tree or a forest, a place of menace or of tranquility.

The particular printmaking technique that Jerawit uses for his artworks is known as Intaglio (collography). This medium is perfect for supporting his concepts and themes, bringing out interesting textures, shadows and light, and allowing your imagination to go right into his atmospheric prints - you really want to explore that secluded forest path, you can almost hear the whisper of the gently moving leaves.

A limitation of collography is that Jerawit can do only 5 editions plus 2 Artist proofs from each print run, and even these vary slightly in the depth of light and dark. However, for the collector, the complexity of the technique and the uniqueness of each piece is another attraction.
